Introduction

There are some substances or materials (matter) around us that are made up of different kinds of atoms. These substances are made up of different elements combined together.

One typical example is water. Water is a substance that is made up of the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen. But do we see hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms when we look inside water? A big NO! Since they are atoms, they cannot be seen with our naked eyes. The combination of the hydrogen atom and oxygen atom is known as chemical combination. There are so many of these substances around us. Any substance around us that is made up of atoms of different kinds of elements that have been chemically combined is known as a compound.
