Types of Forces

There are two categories of forces;

• Contact Force

• Non-contact Force

Contact Force

These types of forces occur when there is direct interaction between 2 objects. Under this category we have

• Frictional force
This is when 2 objects rub against each other. When you slide on the floor with your knees you will feel a burn, that is frictional force.

• Compressional Force
It is the application of power on an object that causes it to squeeze.

• Normal force
This is an upward force that balances the weight of objects on any surface. It keeps them from falling through the surface. (It works against gravity, gravity pulls you down and normal force pushes you up)

• Tensional Force
It’s the pulling force on an object when it is hung on a string.

Non-contact Force

This is when there is a force applied to one object by another object without direct contact. Examples are magnetic and gravitational force.

Gravitational Force:
This force pulls objects to the ground and keeps them there. Every object that has mass applies a gravitational pull on other objects. The law of gravity was proven by Isaac Newton.

Magnetic Force:
This is the force between a magnet and an electrically charged particle.
