Water Related Diseases

Water related diseases are diseases caused by contaminated water. Individuals can contract these diseases by drinking, bathing and touching contaminated water.

Examples of these types of diseases are;

• Guinea Worm Infection



• River Blindness



• Cholera




• Malaria


• Yellow fever


Insects breed on contaminated water and may transfer the disease when they come into contact with human beings. Mosquitoes breed around stagnant contaminated water and give humans Malaria through the bites.

Malaria is a disease caused by a mosquito parasite called plasmodium. Female anopheles mosquito is the carrier of the malaria parasite. The female anopheles mosquito sucks the blood of a malaria infected patient along with the parasite. The parasite then develops in the mosquito and enters the salivary gland which is injected into a healthy person when bitten. The healthy person starts showing symptoms of malaria after a few days. These symptoms are;

• Sweating and increase of body temperature

• Shivering and chills

• Headaches

• Loss of appetite
