Water Holding Capacity

Every plant needs water to grow well. Every plant needs different level of water or amount of water to grow. Some plants need a lot of water to survive such as rice.

Experiment

water- holding capacity and drainage of soils (clay, loamy and sandy)

Aim

drainage and water- holding capacity of soils (clay, loamy and sandy)

Material

3 measuring cylinders, cotton wool, water, 3 funnel, stop watch, samples of dry sandy, loamy and clay

Method

  • Fix cotton wool at the neck of the 3 funnels

  • Place each funnel in the top the measuring cylinders

  • Fill each funnel with a different type of soil (clay, loamy and sandy). Every funnel should have the same amount of soil.

  • Pour a measured volume of water into each funnel. Time the set-up and record the timing for the first drop of water from the funnel.

  • Compare the volume of water in the measuring cylinder after a given time.

  • Record your results
