When a country takes over the daily administration and political management of another country, we say the country is being colonized

Ghana, formerly Gold Coast was governed or colonized by the British. But before the British came it is important to note that, the Portuguese were the very first to come into the country in the year 1471 under the leadership of Don Diego d’Azambuja. It was Prince of Portugal, Prince Henry the Navigator who sent them on this journey

Upon arrival, the Portuguese discovered alluvial gold in the rivers and streams on the coast, thereby naming the country Gold Coast.

After around 171 years, the Dutch drove out the Portuguese. The Dutch came in around 1595 and drove away the Portuguese in 1642.

The British came in before the Dutch in the year 1533 under captain Windham. They really enjoyed Gold Coast and became the last Europeans to leave the country in 1957. The Swedes were the fourth Europeans to come to Gold Coast in 1640 followed finally by the Danes from Denmark in 1660
