Problems of Primary Production in Ghana

Primary production is the backbone of our economy because it contributes massively to the nation's development. This production faces some problems, these are:

Marketing: The poor conditions of the rural roads make the food products very difficult to be transported to the urban areas. The buyers in the urban areas also find it difficult to go to these rural areas to buy their farm produce.

This affects the marketing of the foods because, majority of the foods are left to rot and these foods, are sold at cheaper prices due to their condition.

Lack of storage and preservation facilities: Most of our farming communities have problem with storage and preservation. These farmers do not have storage facilities or enough preservation techniques for crops after harvesting. This makes them lose majority of their farm produce.

Lack of capital: Primary producers need huge capital to invest into their businesses. Most banks do not grant them the needed loans for their businesses due to the lack of confidence the banks have in them. Some of them do not have collateral for the loans.

Poor road network: Road network connects the rural areas to the urban areas. It bridges the gap between them, and this makes easy transportation of primary products.

In Ghana, majority of the rural areas have poor road network. Most of the farming areas have poor road network and this makes them unable to transport the foods from their farms to the urban areas.

High cost of input: The inputs for extracting raw materials are expensive. These inputs are mostly the machines used in the production of the materials. Some of the industries do not have monies to invest into their businesses and this makes them very difficult to operate.
