Difference between Soil Erosion and Soil Depletion
Soil erosion has dire consequences on the environment as well as on farming.
Some of these effects are as follows:
SOIL INFERTILITY: Loss of essential nutrients renders the soil infertile.
LOW AGRICULTURAL OUTPUTS: soil infertility leads to low agricultural outputs such as low farm crop yield and turn out. Eroded land makes cultivation difficult.
POLLUTION: Erosion of soil results in removing or displacing of eroded materials into rivers, streams and other water bodies thereby polluting them.
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURES AND ROADS: Severe erosion may result in weakening of foundations of building structures. It could also destroy roads when it is severe over a long time
DESTRUCTION OF FARM CROPS: Soil erosion when severe displaces soil around roots of crops, exposes the roots allowing them to be easily rooted out.
