Organs of Government

The organs of government simply mean that governmental powers are divided between separate and independent structures. Each of these structures can check the work of the other. There are three (3) organs of government namely: Legislature, Executive and Judiciary.

LEGISLATURE
It is the law-making body of the government. It has the power to enact, amend and repeal public policy or law. Laws enacted by legislatures are known as legislation. The most common names for legislatures are “Parliament” and “Congress.” The members of a legislature are called legislators.


EXECUTIVE
The executive is the branch of government that is responsible for the day to day management of the State. It is composed of the President and all the individuals, agencies and departments that report to the President. It is responsible for administrating and enforcing laws that Parliament passes.


THE JUDICIARY
This arm of government is the system of courts that interprets the law in the name of the State. This branch of the State is often tasked with ensuring equal justice under the law.
