The Concept of Separation of Powers
Separation of powers is a concept that means that the three organs of government i.e. Legislative, Judiciary and the Executive are expected to work independently of each other.
Separation of powers however operates with the chance of check and balances. The system of checks and balances is an important part of the constitution.
This way, no one branch becomes too powerful. Each branch “checks” the power of the other branches to make sure that the power is “balanced” between them.
Advantages of Separation of Powers
I) It prevents abuse of power. It stops government from becoming tyrannical.
II) Separation of Powers safeguard freedom for all.
III) It helps to make the judiciary independent of the Executive
Disadvantages of Separation of Powers
I) Separation of powers with checks and balances makes government slow in dealing with emergencies.
II) Where there is misunderstanding, the arms reach a deadlock and cannot get anything done
