Subject Verb Agreement

We say that the subject and the verb in a sentence agree when they show the same number. This means if the subject is singular then the verb must be singular but if the subject is plural the verb must be plural.


For example;

He cycles to school every day.

They cycle to school every day.

In the first sentence;



In the second sentence;


Remember, we say the subject is singular when it refers to only one person, animal, place, thing or idea. The subject is plural when it refers to more than one person, animal, place, thing or idea.

The singular form of the verb is the form used when speaking in the third person singular. For example, the verb write used in the third person would be written as


The plural form of the verb is the form used when speaking in the third person plural . For the verb write , the third person would be written as;

(This form of the verb is also used when I, You or We are the subjects of the verb!)
