HIV/AIDS

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a virus that enters the human body called Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This disease destroys the immune system of infected persons making them much more vulnerable to other diseases and infections. As the virus grows in the body, susceptibility to diseases worsens eventually leading to death.

Both the virus and the syndrome are often referred to as HIV/AIDS. There is currently no cure for HIV/AIDS. Treatment can slow the course of the condition and some of the infected people can live a long and relatively healthy life.
