Characteristics of Magnets

• They are made up of iron and steel.

• They have two poles namely the North Pole and the South Pole.

• Unlike poles attract whilst like poles repel. When a north pole is brought near a south pole, they attract. When the ends of two magnets of the same poles are brought close together, they push each other away or repel.

• The magnetic force is strong at the end. When the magnet is pulled away from another magnet or metal, the force of attraction drops with distance.

• The magnetic force can pass through other materials to attract other magnetic substances.
