Verifying Volumes of a Regular Object

When the volume of a cube or cuboid is measured, it can be verified using other means called the displacement method. In this method. A quantity of water is poured into a measuring cylinder and the volume is recorded (example. 30cm3). The object is carefully immersed in the water and the final volume is recorded (60cm3).

The initial volume is subtracted from the final volume and the volume of the object is verified.

i.e. A cuboid of length 5cm3, breadth 3cm3 and height 2cm3.

Volume = length x breadth x height

= 5cm3 x 3cm3 x 2cm3

= 30cm3

Verification of the volume of the cuboid

Initial volume of water = 30cm3

Final volume of water = 60cm3

Volume of cuboid = Final volume of water – Initial volume of water

= 60cm3 – 30cm3

=30cm3
