Collective Nouns

These types of nouns are used to name a collection (number) of people or things.

They refer to more than one person or thing but are regarded as a single thing. They can be used as single or plural in sentences.

When the group is performing the same action or we are speaking about the whole group, the singular form of the noun (and verb) can be used.

Example:

The board is voting to replace its chairman today.

The class is excited about the upcoming science week.

When the group is performing different actions or we are speaking about individual members of the group, the plural form of the noun (and verb) are used.

Example:

The board voted in a chairman they thought would better represent them.

At the science fair, the class presented their term projects.
