First Chapter
A phrase is a group of words that work together in a sentence but do not have a subject, a predicate or both. They can often be represented or replaced with one word.
Example; Judy raced home after work.
In the sentence above, the portion of the sentence in bold is a phrase because it does not have a subject.
Example; The English teacher gave them a two page assignment.
In the sentence above, the portion of the sentence in bold is a phrase because it does not have a predicate.
Example; My mother bought a new jacket while at the mall.
In the sentence above, the portion of the sentence in bold is a phrase because it does not have a subject or predicate.
