Past Perfect Tense

We use this tense when speaking about something that happened before another action in the past. We can also use it when speaking about something that took place before a particular time in the past.

It is formed by adding the verb had to the past participle of the verb.

Example;

We had bought everything by the time they arrived.

Example;

We had eaten some snacks before we went to dinner.

To form the negative past perfect tense, we use the verb had not (hadn’t) or the verb had together with the word never before the past participle.

Example;

We had not bought everything by the time they arrived.

Example;

We had never eaten crabs before we went to Ghana.
