Example sentences

Let us look at some example sentences.

1. Manny got very little food at the party.

2. Manny got less food than Annie at the party.

3. Manny got the least food at the party.

In Sentence 1, we know that Manny received a small amount of food at the party but the sentence does not tell us how that compares to the food other people at the party got.

Sentence 2 tells us Manny received less food than one other person (Annie) at the party did. This gives us more information about how much food Manny received by comparing his food and Annie’s.

Sentence 3 tells us how much food Manny received compared to everyone else at the party. From sentence 3 we can tell that everyone else at the party received more food than Manny did.
