Superlative adjectives

Superlative adjectives these are adjectives used to show the difference between three or more nouns (or pronouns).

They also show which of the nouns being compared is the best/ has the most of what is being compared.

It is usually formed by adding –est to the end of the adjective.


Example;

  • Collins is the tallest boy in his class.


In this sentence, "tallest" is the superlative adjective and we use it to compare Collins to the rest of the boys in his class. The word tallest tells us that in the group of boys in Collins’ class, Collins has the most of the quality (height) we are comparing.


  • The brown box is the biggest box in the shop.

In this sentence, "biggest" is the superlative adjective. We use it to compare the size of the brown box to the size of all the other boxes in the shop.


  • Kwame is the strongest in his family.

In this sentence, "strongest" is the superlative adjective. It compares Kwame to everyone in his family.
