Effects of Rapid Population Growth

HIGH DEPENDENCY RATIO: The need to provide for all those who do not form part of the active labor force with education, shelter, clothing, food, health care etc. Imposes a heavy burden on both individuals and the government.


PRESSURE ON SOCIAL AMENITIES: A growing population forces the government to provide funds for more schools, hospitals, good drinking water, teaching staff, doctors etc. The amenities deteriorate faster due to the pressure on them.


IMPROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT: A rapid increase in population also leads to carelessness in the disposal of waste. Where there is an absence of effective sanitation and waste management, cholera and malaria outbreak are common.


UNEMPLOYMENT: Where the number of people who want jobs far exceed the available jobs, unemployment occurs. Under such conditions, the likelihood of people becoming involved in unproductive activities is very high. Example Armed robbery, prostitution etc
