Adverbs of Place

These tell us where the verb action happened. They answer the question ‘where?’ They are usually positioned after the object or the main verb. They can show direction, distance, or the position of an object compared to another object.

Let us look at some examples

Direction: Up, down, forward, backwards, upward, around, nowhere, anywhere

Adverbs ending in –ward show movement in a specific direction

Distance: Close, nearby, faraway

Object position: Here, there, above, between, behind

Now, some example sentences.

Example; Jack and Jill went up.

The word up tells us in what direction Jack and Jill went.

Example; I left my books downstairs.

The word downstairs tells us the location of the books compared to the speaker. The books are downstairs but the speaker is not.
