INSTITUTIONS THAT HELP MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER

The parliament of Ghana makes laws for the country. Other laws referred to as by-laws are also made by the traditional or district assembly which helps a particular assembly keep law and order.

The Police are essential in maintaining law and order in a country. As part of their duties, protecting lives and properties cannot be left out. Through the duties they perform they develop mutual respect between themselves and citizens.

When a citizen breaks the law or is caught doing anything illegal, he or she can be arrested and sent to court to face trial.

When someone is arrested, until he/she is pronounced guilty at court, the person is not guilty. This great power given to the courts enable them to make orders that help punish law breakers by imposing a fine, or restrictions or being put in jail.

As part of the above duties, they settle cases; they also interpret and help people to understand the laws of the country. Law offenders are punished by the courts.
