Angiosperms and Primates

Angiosperms which included most trees evolved at the same time as mammals. Angiosperms are flowering plants that produce fruits. Mammals that became adapted to living in trees often used fruits as their main diet. Mammals that lived on trees are known as primates.

Primates flourished and migrated southward to southern America as the continent drifted slowly towards the north.

These primates evolved into anthropoids which are the ancestors of monkeys, apes and humans. The anthropoids’ primates had larger brains and their brain case formed a larger portion of their head. The surviving anthropoids are classified into three super families, namely;

New world monkeys

Old world monkeys

Hominoids

The new world monkeys have long tails and flat noses while the old world monkeys lacked tails and have protruding noses.
