Floods
You have probably seen an area around your house or school flooded after it rains and you would be hoping for it to go down so you could see land again. Are you aware why those places flood? And what do you usually see when the water clears?
A Flood is a Natural Disaster where a dry piece of land is covered or submerged under water.
The flooded areas around your schools or homes make not look too harmful so it might seem to you that Floods are not that dangerous. Floods are very dangerous, they have the ability to break down buildings and wash people and things (cars, kiosks, equipment etc) away.
Some floods may remain stagnant for days or weeks in a particular area and not drain away. Floods can deeply erode an area making it very costly to repair or rebuild, vehicles would have to find alternative roads to access.
We might know one common type of flood involving land, but floods can also occur in water bodies too. When a river has more water flowing through it than it can hold the river becomes flooded.
It is very common to see low lying areas completely flooded whilst higher areas experience fewer floods, this is because water moves from higher ground to lower ground.
