The Nose

The nose is the sense organ used to smell. The nose is a very sensitive organ and it is able to detect various kinds of smells which it classifies as good smells (perfumes) or bad smells (flatulence). If a smell irritates the nose the resulting reaction will be a sneeze. The nose has two openings which are called nostrils. Nostrils are separated by a wall called Septum. Nostrils are lined with hair which traps foreign particles from entering the nose.

Septum is made out of cartilage which is flexible type of tissue.

We find it difficult to smell and breathe when we have the flu or a cold. This is because mucus present in the nose becomes thick and blocks the nose preventing us from picking up scents around us easily.
