The Tongue

The tongue is the sense organ we use to taste. The tongue is covered with taste buds which are not visible to the human eye (there are between 3000 to 10,000 taste buds). The tongue has four different taste receptors which help us determine when something is sweet, sour, salty or bitter.

The sweet receptors are mostly on the tip of the tongue

The sour receptors are at the sides of the tongue.

The salty receptors are just behind the sweet receptors at the front of the tongue.

The bitter receptors are located at the back of the tongue.
