Parts of a flower
A flower has four (4) main parts. They are:
- Petals
- Sepals
- Stamen
- Pistil
Petals
The flower is the reproductive part of the plant. Flowering plants have bright petals (red, pink and yellow). They attract insects or birds that transfer pollen to the stigma of another flower for fertilization. A group of petals is called corolla.
Sepals
A group of sepals is called calyx. They are mostly green and found at the base of the flower and hold the main reproductive part of the flower. They protect the flower parts in the bud stage and manufacture food for the flower.
Stamen
This is the male reproductive organ of the flower, it is made up of two parts. They are; anther and filament. The filament holds the anther which contains pollen grains.
Pistil
This is made up of three (3) parts. They are:
Stigma: This receives pollen grains during pollination
Style: It is the stalk that connects the stigma to the ovary
Ovary: It contains the ovules. It is the female reproductive organ of the flower
Sexual reproduction in plants is in two stages. They are: Pollination and Fertilization.
