Volume of Irregular Objects

Irregular solids do not have a definite shape. Calculating their volume is based on displacement method.

Activity 1: HOW TO FIND THE VOLUME OF IRREGULAR SOLIDS (STONE)

Aim : to find the volume of a stone

Materials : measuring cylinder, water, thread, piece of stone

Method:

• Pour some water in a measuring cylinder and read the volume V1 as 30cm³

• Tie a string to a piece of stone and gently lower it into the measuring cylinder. Read the new volume of the water V2 as 60cm³

• Find the difference V2 - V1

  V = 60cm³ - 30cm³

  V = 30cm³

• The result is the volume of the stone.
