Characteristics of the three main soil horizons

Plants are grown on the top soil, this is because of the nutrient content. Deep roots of plants extend down into the sub soil but most roots grow in the top soil. They cannot grow into the solid bedrock. The horizontal layers of soil help to know the type of plants to grow. It can also guide in tool selection for farming.
