Evaporation

This is the method used in separating a solid-liquid mixture that is soluble where the liquid changes to gas leaving the solid when heat is applied. E.g. Salt and water.

How to perform evaporation

• Mix an amount of salt and water thoroughly such that no salt particle is seen in the solution.

• Pour the solution in a container and heat it over fire.

• Observe the solution as it continues boiling and record it.

Observation

The water evaporated when it changed to steam leaving the salt crystals in the container.

This method is used in salt production at Ada which the sea at the coast dries up due to intense heat from the sun. After a while, numerous quantities of salt crystals are formed and packaged and sold on commercial basis.
