Filtration

This is the method used in separating a solid-liquid mixture which is not miscible. E.g. water and chalk particles.

How to perform filtration

• Mix an amount of water and chalk particles.

• Put a filter paper or foam in a funnel.

• Place the funnel with the filter paper on a beaker or any container.

• Shake the mixture thoroughly and gradually pour it in the funnel containing the filter paper.

• Check the observation and record it.

Observation

The water runs through the filter paper into the funnel whilst the chalk particles remained on the filter paper. The chalk particles can be dried to obtain the raw chalk.
