Nekton

The nekton communities are those that can actively swim against water current. They include all the organisms which are not planktonic. They range from the smallest fishes to the bigger mammals eg whales.

They provide a very good source of food, both for other marine organisms as well as humans. The fishes are made up of diverse groups. They can be classified as bony or cartilaginous fishes. The bony fishes have bones making up their skeletal structure. The sardines are typical examples as well as fishes like Tunas, mackerel, sparids and herrings, just to mention a few. They all fall under the class Osteichytes. The cartilaginous fishes include the sharks. They have cartilage making up their skeletal structure. Some nektonic molluscs also include the cuttlefish, squid and octopus.
