Mineral Deposits in Ghana

The principal minerals mined in Ghana are gold, diamonds, manganese, bauxite and the newly found oil. These minerals are of huge economic importance to our country.


Importance of Minerals to Ghana's Economy

1) Employment: Mining offers employment opportunities to a lot of people. Goldfields Ghana employs over a thousand people. Miners, goldsmiths, jewelry sellers are some of the opportunities.


2) Source of revenue: Mining companies pay huge taxes to government. These corporate taxes serve as revenue which government uses to build roads, schools, hospitals etc.


3) Infrastructure: Mining companies provide roads, schools and hospitals as part of their corporate social responsibilities in the communities they operate. Example Anglogold Ashanti built the Obuasi Lenclay stadium for Ashanti Gold football club.


4) Source of Foreign Exchange: When these minerals are extracted and exported, the country earns foreign revenue. Gold, cocoa, timber, and oil are the highest foreign exchange earners for Ghana.
