The National Flag
The inspirational Ghana flag which is identified with a red, gold and green in horizontal stripes with a five pointed black star in the middle of the gold stripe is the only National symbol used for state mourning.
It was designed by Mrs. Theodosia Okoh to replace the flag of Britain when Ghana obtained their independence in 1957, it tells a lot about the rich history of Ghana.
The red represents the blood of our forefathers who fought and died for our independence.
The yellow in the middle represents our rich natural mineral resource in the country which includes bauxite, manganese, diamond and gold which depicts the previous name Gold coast given by the whites upon the massive exploration of Gold on the land in the early 18th century.
The green represents the rich vegetation resource of Ghana. Forest and farm lands easily grow on this rich soil.
The black-star stands firmly to remind us that we are the Hope of Africa. As Nkrumah put this in his speech ‘The Independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked to the total liberation of Africa.’
