Parallel Cultures II

Parallel culture helps to promote peace among religions, good provision of health care is maintained and the promotion of National Integration System is also maintained.

Notwithstanding the above advantages, parallel culture is very expensive, it is a waste of time, and can really bring misunderstanding and frustrations.

In Ghana, those customs which are considered irrelevant have been abolished. These are the trokosi system, the cruel widowhood rites, the female genital mutilation, use of facial marks among others are very painful and outmoded.


Facial / tribal marks: these are marks made with knifes and blades on faces of people of some tribes for easy identification of their members and other superstitious purposes. Apart from identification, some believe it protects them and for beautification.

Facial marks are an infringement on the basic rights humans. It also leads to infections from the cutting objects.


Female circumcision: The removal of the clitoris from the vagina of a female organ is termed female genital mutilation.

The elderly believe that this culture reduces the sexual desire of a woman until she is ready for marriage. This is a very diabolic and painful act which infringes on the rights of the woman. It makes child birth very difficult and can sometimes lead to death. The spread of Sexually Transmitted Disease is very high.
