Latitudes

Latitudes are the distances north or south of the equator. The equator is the line of 0^o latitude. It is the starting point for measuring latitude. The latitude of the North Pole is 900N and that of the South Pole is 90^oS. The latitude of every point in between is some degree north or south, from 0^o to 90^o. One degree of latitude covers about 69 miles (111 kilometers).

The major latitudes are:

North Pole – 90°N

South Pole – 90°S

Arctic Circle – 66 1/2°S

Antarctic Circle – 66 1/2°S

EQUATOR - 0°

Tropic of Cancer – 23 1/2°N

Tropic of Capricorn – 23 1/2°S
