Latitudes

Latitudes are the distances north or south of the equator. The equator is the line of 0o latitude. It is the starting point for measuring latitude. The latitude of the North Pole is 900N and that of the South Pole is 90oS. The latitude of every point in between is some degree north or south, from 0o to 90o. One degree of latitude covers about 69 miles (111 kilometers).

The major latitudes are:

North Pole – 90°N

South Pole – 90°S

Arctic Circle – 66 1/2°S

Antarctic Circle – 66 1/2°S

EQUATOR - 0°

Tropic of Cancer – 23 1/2°N

Tropic of Capricorn – 23 1/2°S
